Meet Wendy Diamond: Impact Investor, Entrepreneur, Humanitarian, and Founder of LDP Ventures and Animal Fair Media. She’s also an Ellis Island Honor Society recipient. In 2013, Diamond was inspired to launch Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO)/#ChooseWOMEN after volunteering with the Adelante Foundation in Honduras. There, she saw firsthand the impact of microloans on impoverished women and was moved to take action. At the time, she learned there were 250 million girls living in poverty. Only 1% of venture dollars went to women founders, despite the fact that women perform 66% of the world’s work, earn only 10% of the world’s income, and yet account for 85% of consumer purchases and control $20 trillion in worldwide spending. Wendy recognized the potential for women entrepreneurs to drive economic growth and alleviate poverty, and thus WEDO was born.
1 in 3 American women live in poverty, and globally 70% of those living in severe poverty are women and girls. Despite performing 66% of the world’s work, women earn only 10% of the world’s income.
An increase of women in leadership positions from zero to just 30% is associated with a 15% increase in profitability. Women are also responsible borrowers, paying back microloans worldwide at a 97% rate of return, and 90% of their earnings go towards educating their children and supporting their families.
